Salt melts; sand adds traction
Salt and sand do different jobs. Salt lowers the freezing point of water and can help loosen or melt snow and ice when temperature and conditions allow. Sand does not melt ice. It provides grit that can improve traction on a slippery surface.
North Dakota's Department of Transportation notes that deicers become less effective as temperatures fall. That is why conditions matter: scraping, salt, sand, or a combination may be used at different times instead of assuming one material works for every event.
What anti-icing means
Anti-icing is treatment applied before snow or freezing rain so ice and snow are less likely to bond tightly to the surface. It is a proactive step, not a substitute for plowing or clearing. Forecast timing, pavement temperature, precipitation type, and the product being used all affect whether pre-treatment is suitable.
When post-plow treatment may help
After mechanical clearing, thin residue, packed snow, meltwater, or refreeze can leave slick areas. Deicer may help break the bond when temperatures permit. Sand may be used where added traction is needed, including very cold conditions when ordinary salt is less effective.
Clear and treat the highest-priority areas first
For a business, priority areas commonly include accessible parking and routes, main entrances, fire exits, high-traffic sidewalks, drive lanes, and loading or delivery access. The order depends on how the property operates. A restaurant opening early, an apartment property, and a warehouse with overnight deliveries may need different priorities.
Watch the places where ice returns
Downspouts, shaded walks, low spots, drainage paths, roof runoff, compacted traffic lanes, and drifting corners can refreeze after the main clearing. Identifying those locations during a pre-season walkthrough helps create a more specific treatment plan.
Material choice should be property-specific
Surface type, temperature, drainage, traffic, landscaping, nearby entrances, and environmental considerations all matter. More material is not automatically better. A snow and ice plan should use appropriate amounts, document problem areas, and include follow-up checks when conditions change.
